This time, I decided to jump through a blackhole instead of randomly selecting a system within jump range. This worked out well, as I got 171,000 years from center, and to an area of space that this particular save has never been.
Just like last time, my target planet was the closest one, in the same direction I was pointed. Wottseb is a mountainous, desert planet; with billowing dust storms every 10 minutes. Because the terrain was so wild, I relied on my ship far more than the last planet, and I did use a signal booster to locate points of interest.
I landed in the middle of the night, on top of one of the innumerous mountains. While getting my bearings, I harvested all the Echinocactus that had spawned on top of my first peak. I seem to always be nearly out of cactus flesh - and it takes forever to grow.
Once the sun began to come up, I made my way down the mountain. I was able to get almost all of the animals recorded in the first valley, but it wasn’t long before the first of many storms hit. I jumped back into my ship and started scanning - looking for any points of interest I could find. Quite frankly, I hit more waypoints and drop pods than buildings.
The views alone made up for the lack of buildings…as long as a dust storm didn’t spin up. There wasn’t anything particularly dangerous about the storms - except that it was impossible to see anything. The fauna wasn’t very interesting, except for the six-legged wolf-lizard. There were a couple of flying creatures, but I was never able to get close enough to get a good look at them, and of course, there were quite a few burrowing ground dwellers.
I checked the multitool box at the first minor settlement I came across. I didn’t get lucky and find an S-Class Experimental - it was only a B-Class Rifle.
I ended the night by hitting a few more Waypoints, one last Drop Pod, and an observatory that gave me the location of a ruin off-planet.
I really love desert planets. Wandering among the cacti, chasing the glowing yellow turtles, and moving through the dry grass towards objectives is the apex of my gameplay. Next time, though, I could do with fewer mountains, and less frequent storms.
I also included a short video of clips from my exploration. The format is completely stolen from @blakespot, but it is my preferred video type for watching someone play: highlights, no commentary.
And, as before, my progress on the exploration objectives:
Have you explored any planets lately that have blown your mind?
